How to Build a Personal Vision Script
If you don’t have a clear vision for your future, you’re not in the driver’s seat—you’re just along for the ride.
For much of my adult life, I was adrift.
I had set goals for my career but neglected the rest of my life. My health, marriage, friendships, and finances were all on autopilot. I was successful in business but barely making ends meet. My marriage was good, not great, and I had no hobbies or close friendships. Worst of all, my health was declining.
I was drifting. And the scary part? I didn’t even realize it.
Most people live this way without knowing it. They have no clear destination, hoping things will work out for the best. This creates anxiety, uncertainty, and a lack of confidence. But the good news is, there’s a way to change this: create a personal vision script.
What’s a Personal Vision Script?
In my book The Vision-Driven Leader, I teach business leaders how to create a Vision Script for their organizations. The same concept can be applied to your personal life.
A Personal Vision Script is a document where you describe what you want to be true in each of the nine key domains of life—body, mind, spirit, love, family, community, work, hobbies, and money. This script is written in the present tense, as though it’s already a reality.
Here’s an example of a vision script for my Body domain:
I am lean and strong, possessing vibrant health and extraordinary fitness. My heart is strong and healthy. My arteries are supple and clear of obstructions.
My auto-immune system is in excellent condition; I am disease-, infection-, and allergy-resistant.
I have more than enough energy to accomplish the tasks I undertake. This is because I control my mental focus, workout five days a week, choose healthy foods, take supplements as needed, and sleep 7–9 hours a night.
I monitor my stress level and have become skilled at regulating my nervous system.
I see my primary care physician annually and my cardiologist every quarter. With their oversight, I monitor my blood labs and adjust my diet, supplements, and medications as needed.
By creating a vision like this in each area of your life, you can design a future that gives you a sense of direction, purpose, and control. It’s like shifting from a reactive, drift-mode to proactive, intentional living.

Why a Personal Vision Script Matters
Research shows that having a clear sense of purpose significantly reduces anxiety and improves well-being. Studies indicate that people with a strong sense of purpose have better cardiovascular health and even improved longevity.
Additionally, visualization exercises, like those involved in writing a vision script, activate brain regions responsible for planning and decision-making, leading to better emotional regulation and stress management.
Having a purpose also builds resilience. Individuals who set clear, meaningful goals recover faster from stress and are better equipped to handle life’s challenges.
How to Write Your Personal Vision Script
Writing a Personal Vision Script doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these steps:
Set aside time: Carve out a half-day to focus on this project. Alternatively, spend 30 minutes each day for nine days, focusing on one life domain per day.
Write in the present tense: Describe each domain as though your vision is already a reality. For example, in the Family domain, you might write, “My relationship with my spouse is filled with trust, laughter, and deep connection.”
Make it specific: Vague statements don’t provide clear direction. Be as specific as possible. Instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” write, “I work out five days a week and have more than enough energy for my daily tasks.”
Make it compelling: Make sure what you have written is personally compelling—something that excites you and magnetically pulls you toward it.
Review and Refine Regularly
Creating a Vision Script isn’t a one-and-done task. Life evolves, and your priorities will too. That’s why it’s crucial to review and tweak your script on a regular basis. I suggest you do this quarterly. This ensures that your vision remains aligned with your current circumstances and future goals.
This regular review will keep you on track, helping you adjust course when necessary and recommit to the life you’re intentionally designing.
Finally, drifting through life doesn’t serve you or anyone else. When you design your future with a Personal Vision Script, you take control. You set yourself up for a life of confidence, purpose, and achievement. Take time this week to map out your vision and start living with intention.
